A Guide to Scenic Lunchtime Stops on Devon’s Coast
Where Views Meet Delicious Food
Devon’s coastline offers a mix of beautiful landscapes and fresh, local food - perfect for those looking for a memorable lunchtime stop with a view. Whether you’re floating on the water or tucked away on a cliffside, here are some must-visit spots for your next coastal lunch.
River Exe Cafe, Exmouth
Well we couldn't not start with ourselves now could we? Starting with our iconic (someone once used that, we like it!) River Exe Cafe, a floating restaurant offers a one-of-a-kind experience.
If you’re after a lunch with a view (and we mean really a view), you can’t beat our special little spot.
Accessible only by boat, we sit on the River Exe estuary with panoramic views of the water. We serve an incredible variety of seafood (as well as other options), from the Fisherman’s Platter to daily fresh catches. With locally sourced ingredients and a lively yet relaxed (we aim to please) atmosphere, we're the perfect spot for a leisurely lunch on the water.
Booking ahead is recommended, especially for summer.
The Salutation Inn, Topsham
Next up, The Salutation Inn in Topsham. A historic and charming destination for food lovers in Devon. Housed in an impressive Grade II‑listed 18th‑century inn dating back to at least 1720, this classic Devon eatery combines old‑world character with modern, seasonally inspired cuisine in the heart of Topsham.
Imagine settling in for a leisurely lunch or refined afternoon tea in the GlassHouse cafe, or indulging in beautifully crafted seasonal dishes that showcase the finest local ingredients from the South West - from fresh seafood from the nearby River Exe to West Country game and produce. The relaxed yet elegant setting and warm service make The Salutation Inn in Topsham a perfect stop after exploring quaint Fore Street or strolling along the estuary with it's views up to Exeter, or down river to Lympstone and Exmouth.
The Seahorse, Dartmouth
For a more refined lunch, The Seahorse in Dartmouth is a must-visit. Famous for its sustainably sourced seafood and elegant dishes, the restaurant has been delighting locals and visitors for years. The menu evolves with the seasons, so whether it’s a fresh oyster platter or a beautifully cooked fish dish, you’re in for a treat. Its riverside location offers stunning views across the Dart.
Blackpool Sands
Blackpool Sands recently underwent a thoughtful refurbishment, making this family-friendly beach café even more inviting. Overlooking one of Devon’s most picturesque beaches, it’s perfect for a casual lunch with an incredible view. Tuck into delicious mains, light bites, tacos or beach favourites while enjoying one of the best views in the county. Sun, sea, sauna (yes there is one of those too!) and snacks - what more could you want?
The River Shack, Stoke Gabriel
For a laid-back spot away from the crowds, The River Shack in Stoke Gabriel delivers. Tucked along the banks of the River Dart, this café combines a relaxed, waterside setting with a menu that showcases local ingredients. Ideal for a tranquil lunch surrounded by nature.
La Mar, Exmouth
Perched overlooking colourful Exmouth Marina on Devon’s scenic East Coast, La Mar offers an elegant yet relaxed dining experience with panoramic views across the marina - perfect for lunches, served Thursday to Sunday. Known locally for its inventive seasonal menus crafted from the best South West ingredients, La Mar showcases fresh seafood like scallops, prawns and Atlantic cod alongside locally sourced meat and produce, blending international flavour with Devon coastal charm.
Whether you’re after the adventure of dining on a (our!) floating restaurant or the peace of a riverside terrace, Devon’s coastline has plenty to offer when it comes to scenic lunch spots.
Local or just passing through, make time for a coastal lunch that showcases the best of Devon's dining scene.
