How do I get there? The River Exe Cafe is surrounded by water and can only be accessed by boat. Upon booking you can choose to book a Puffin Water Taxi From Exmouth Marina or arrive on your own boat. Booking is essential.
When do you open and close? The restaurant is open from 1st April until 30th September, 12 Midday till 11pm.
How do I make a booking? If you are using your own boat then you must call us on 07761 116103. If not, you will need a Water Taxi. Click here to book a Table and Taxi Together.
Where exactly are you? We are a floating cafe in the middle of the Exe Estuary, not joined to the land at all.
Can we bring babies and children? Yes we have high chairs and a small selection of activities to entertain the children, we also have a children's menu.
Can we have help getting on board? Yes of course, just ring our friendly staff and we will arrange for some extra help where needed.
What do I wear? Casual warm clothing (it can be a little windy on the water).
Do you serve anything other than fish? Yes we serve Meat and Vegetarian Dishes.
Are dogs welcome? Well behaved dogs on leads are welcome.
Do you have a toilet? Yes.
Do you take card payments? Yes.
Is there a covered area? Yes, we have an indoor area and a covered 0utdoor area with heaters.
Is the water taxi covered? Yes.
What happens if it rains? All table bookings are made for inside the restaurant unless stated otherwise. If you prefer to sit outside, please ask the team on arrival and they will do their best to accommodate your request.
Do you feel the cafe moving? A little, we are fixed to a mooring at either end of the cafe.
Can you cook for Celiac/Gluten Free/Dairy Free? Yes, just let us know when you book.
Can I come just for a drink? Yes, if you have your own transport. When possible we have a Bar Snacks Menu on offer too.
Do you provide Vegetarian and Vegan options on the Menu? Yes, we have a number of options suitable for a vegan or vegetarian diet.
Do you have disabled access? There is a virtual tour and video on our website that may inform you regarding any individual needs. There is however, a ramp down to the Water Taxis that can be very steep depending on the tides. There are also steps onto the Water Taxi and off onto the restaurant. The toilet facilities only allow single occupancy. We are unable to comment on individual cases but hopefully the website will inform you further.
Is there a charge if I cancel my booking? As long as we receive 48hrs notice from the time of your booking there is no charge for cancellations. Any late cancellations (within a 48hr period from time of booking) or no-show on the day will incur a £20 per person charge. River Exe Cafe is in a truly unique location. The logistics involved with planning each service means that every detail, even down to the fresh water we have on board, is dictated by the number of guests we are expecting each day. The logistics involved with running the Cafe are incredibly complex and therefore we have to view a visit to the Cafe as an experience such as a theatre trip or excursion where we have to have numbers planned in advance.
Being situated in the middle of the estuary means we do not receive 'walk-ins' and so if we do receive cancellations we can't fill, as an independent seasonal business, it can have a huge impact for us. We do understand life can be unpredictable but we hope our customers understand it is necessary for us to have this policy in place in order to protect ourselves.
